1. Effective methods for Enhancing Speaking Skills. Lhakpa Dolma (Ms.) TCV Selakui school.
English is a language of global communication in this fast growing world. It has become so much part of our life that we can't do away with it. Language is communicated broadly through four major skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. In Tibetan schools, children are good in writing and reading but they need to go a long way to improve their speaking skill.
The history of teaching English language has presented a fascinating variety of methods. The essence of spoken English is to boost student's confidence by overcoming internal (attitudinal, outlook) and external (environmental) barriers. So I want to discuss on some effective methods which will foster fluency in speaking.
1. Model Environment:
Since our aim is to enable learners to communicate fluency, providing opportunities, platform and environment will be the most appropriate solution. Language learning can be compared to swimming. One can't learn swimming by simply watching, he/she needs water and by plunging into the water he/she will learn. Through practice and help from their coach they will learn swimming. Thus our role in English teaching is a coach. Lenient coach and flexible class are preferable to stern coach and rigid classroom.
2 Making Rules:
In Tibetan schools, some students feel shy, uneasy and nervous to speak in English while others are afraid of being laughed at. So by making rules we are giving them room to overcome these fears at the same time when everyone has to speak the hesitation and fear of making mistake will be less. The rules will be more effective and will retain for a longer period if is laid by the children themselves. Learning a language is more or less like acquiring a new habit and habits are acquired slowly. So in the beginning children may have some difficulties but gradually development will be there. Once they acquire the habit they will go a long way in their life.
3 Learning Through Fun:
One of the most important factors of learning is that it should be made fun and interesting. Our sole duty is to create readiness, willingness and interest among the students. We all know children love to play and have competition so through games and competition learning will be enjoyable and student's uptake on the learning will be more as they won't realize the difficulties that they experience in lecture. So unless proper care is taken learning will be boring and uninteresting.
4 Learning Through Situation:
Anything taught or learnt in a situation is more meaningful. It makes teaching more realistic. Moreover the learner is able to learn better and will be in their minds for a longer time. C.C Fries rightly said, "The only true and correct meaning of words is the situation in which they are used". Situation can establish a close and direct relation between an expression and its meaning. We can bring any situation. For example, the situation which the pupils know from his experience in his daily life, family circle, environment or situations which can be recalled through pictures, maps, chart and other aids. Teaching is after all an art. Giving sufficient opportunities to use the language in a situation will bring improvement in their speaking because merely by knowing words, individual sentence and rules of grammar won't help them much.
5 Role Play:
Once the importance of situational of language is recognized, role play becomes inescapable. The essential of sentences and words pronunciation of the English are learnt in the best way through practice by playing different role play for example the role of a patient, teacher and students, customer and receptionist, passenger and ticket collector and so on.
6 Using Visual & Audio Aids:
These days using visual and audio visual aids have proved the best method in teaching English language. These aids brighten up the classroom; bring more variety and interest in learning the English language. There is nothing which delights the students more than showing movies, movie clippings and listening to words of wisdom and jokes. And short stories told by native speakers. These aids provide a situation and opportunities for students to grab the meaning of the sentence, words and help them in picking the pronunciation and accent of the native speaker. On the whole it helps the students in better understanding of the English language.
Thus by providing environment and opportunities, our endeavor of educating or facilitating the students in their speaking will be effective.
