Methodology on speaking Miss Nyima Tsamchoe, TCV school Chauntra.
The reason why our youngster are apprehensive when it comes to sharing views, ideas or speaking in English is not because they are taught limited English or lack of vocabulary. It is because of the typical shyness and low level of self confidence that our youngster tend to associate with the learning of English. This deficiency can only be cured by constant oral practice of the language. Speaking is the basis of good learning of the language. It is the foundation of language learning. And it is very necessary to make this foundation strong and firm. The more we speak the better our spoken language will be and the more confidence we gain. A good speaker always possesses good personality. Speaking is necessary for every stage of learning English.
The benefits of the oral work:
1 it enhances the comprehensive skill.
2 it gives good listening practice.
3 it helps fluency in a conversation.
4 lay the foundation of a good speech.
5 it gives the students the habit of using correct sentences.
6 it removes hesitation and shyness and brings confidence in them.
7 the students will become a good speaker.
8 it provides the students a platform where they can open up and share their views openly.
The different ways of assigning oral works are:
1. Speaking everywhere:
Students should be encouraged to converse in English as often and as everywhere as possible. It should not be confined to classroom only. Teachers should take the initiative and inspire the students by conversing in English anywhere, any place and at any time.
2. Learn through games:
English teacher must play different games in the class and let the students enjoy speaking in the class and let the students enjoy speaking with no bars whether they make mistake or not. The games like guessing games where the students have to guess what is written on their back must be played where the students are divided into 2/3 groups and let the concerned groups help the student by describing the words in 4/5 sentences rather than the particular student guessing and rest of the students listening which becomes quite monotonous.
3. Role plays and dramas:
Role plays, dramas, skits and one act plays are the perfect ways to install confidence and composure on the stage for a student. They would love to imitate other characters on the stage thereby gaining of self-confidence in acting and speaking.
4. Completion of stories:
Students love to hear and tell stories and also take great pride in making up one. They are very inquisitive and always on the lookout for more information and knowledge. Instead of telling them stories always, it's better to start a story and let them complete it. This would not only enhance their creativity but also their spoken language to a great extent.
5. Sharing of experience:
Teacher must spare the last few minutes from their period and give it to the students to share their experience or special incidents with the class. This will create special excitement and pride in the student. The more they share things, the better will be the learning atmosphere in the class. More eagerness and participation from the students will help their cause. While practicing the above mentioned techniques the concerned English teacher must always keep in mind that in order to make the oral work a successful one each student must get time to share their views and the teacher must make sure that when a person is sharing no interruption should be there as it would discourage the learner. Teacher must be very considerate when the students make mistakes. It is of utmost importance to create a conducive oral environment in the class and the school. The more there is platform, encouragement and interaction, the better the scope of the development in oral skill.
