STS Poanta School has 24 teachers who come under the Teacher Professional Development Project which will benefit 384 students. Under the leadership of the school Principal Mr. Namgyal Yarphel la and the Headmistress Miss. Kalsang la, the school is implementing both the PGP and Collaborative practices and are going on well. On the very outset, Orientation and workshop has been given to the teachers of both the section, Primary and Senior by the school Headmistress.
Annual Professional Growth Plan (PGP)
The Individual Professional Growth (PGP) of all the teachers have been collected by the school heads and not only that the school heads have one to one meeting with some of the teachers regarding their own PGPs. The school also observed a day when all the teachers had a gathering and shared their PGPs with rest of the teachers. There was also a day when the teachers shared their understanding of the books they had read from the Teachers' Reading Corner. The books in the Teaching Reading Corner are used well either for their own PGP purposes as well as for their collaborative practices.
Collaborative Practices in the school
The major collaborative practice the teachers are doing in the school is Lesson Study Group. Almost all the teachers are engaged in the lesson study according to the subject they taught. The lesson study groups are Tibetan, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. The complete cycle of the Lesson Study was also followed to the best of their level. Whatever collaborative lesson plans they have prepared are submitted to the school head and now available in the website for others' reference.
PGP Sharing Day: The teachers shared their Professional Growth Plan for the academic session. It is a part of Professional Development plan in order for a teacher to grow professionally by carrying our action plan and conducting small research at a local level. The plan includes the identification of an issue or an area of concern, presenting the statement of intent, discussion on the procedures to be followed in the course of the action plan, specifying the time frame and the outcome of the exercise. The teachers have selected various different fields of study and plan to adopt diverse ways to tackle their issues. It was a very informative and an eye opening session and the resources they have pooled in are invaluable.
PD Book Sharing Day: "Sharing Book Review" for the session 2014-15 was held on 16th Aug 2014 in the Language Lab. This program started at 11 am and continued for three hours till 2:00 pm. wherein all the teachers shared their views and explained in brief about the book they have read during the summer vacation on pedagogy. As far as teaching is concerned this program proved very beneficial for all the teachers. As these books on pedagogy included the different aspects and methods of teaching, the problems they face while teaching and how to tackle those problems in different ways. So, this was an effective presentation of book review by all the teachers. The arrangement of light refreshment was also made for the staff members.
Social Science Lesson Study Group: The Senior class Social Science teachers worked together and formed their own Lesson Study groups. They met together and planned the Lesson. After that one of the teachers demonstrated the lesson and others observed. Next, they incorporated the feedbacks and observations and refined the previous lesson Plan. Another teacher demonstrated the lesson and others observed the teaching. The lesson plan was further refined and submitted to the Headmaster.
English Lesson Study Group: There were two groups of English teachers. Both the groups had their complete round of lesson study cycle. Both the groups planned the lessons, demonstrated, feedback session and refined the lesson plan further. The final Lesson plan would be submitted to the school Headmaster.
Tibetan Lesson Study Group: The Tibetan teachers had their own lesson study group. The topic they had chosen for their lesson study was "Edhen". The teachers met during their free time and chalked out a nice lesson plan. After that one of the teachers demonstrated the lesson while the other observed the class. Next, they met and had their post lesson conversation and feedback. They incorporated the suggestions and refined the previous lesson plan, which was once again demonstrated by the second teacher. After their complete lesson study cycle, the lesson Plan was submitted to the Headmaster.
Social Science Lesson Study Group: The Social Science teachers had their own lesson study group. The teachers followed the complete lesson study cycle. They had taken Geography lesson. The planned the lessons, demonstrated the lesson, and further refined the lessons after incorporating the suggestions and feedback. Their final lesson plan was submitted to the school headmaster for sharing with other teachers of the same subject and grade.
Mathematics and Science Lesson study Group: The teachers who were teaching Mathematics and Science had their own Lesson study group. They had already completed their first round of the complete lesson cycle. They planned their lesson during their free period. They referred to the books from the Teachers reading corner. They demonstrated the lesson and incorporated the suggestions and feedback and further polished the previous lesson plan. Finally the lesson was submitted to the school headmaster for sharing with other teachers.
