14th – 16th August 2014: A three days' workshop on Early Grade Reading Translators was organized by the Department of Education, CTA with the fund from USAID through The Tibet Fund at Samyeling Tibetan Colony in New Delhi. A group of translators comprising of people from various backgrounds such as teachers, University students, writers, translators from the Publication Department, DoE etc. The resource persons for this workshop were Prof. Krishna Kumar, former Director of NCERT, Dr. Latika Gupta, the editor of the Children book Barkha series and Mr. Gyaltsen, former Education Officer at Department of Education, CTA Dharamsala.
During the workshop, all the resource persons highlighted the key issues like; the meaning of Language, the need for Children's Literature and the storytelling way of teaching. Apart from these, they particularly stressed on the different strategies, methods and procedures of translating Children's Literature into Tibetan. There was also sharing of ideas among the participants.
During the 1st Education Advisory Conference held in 2013, there raised a strong need for more Children's Literature in Tibetan Language in the Tibetan schools. In the following year, the Department of Education, CTA conducted various workshops for school Librarians and Primary teachers on early grade reading. The department also provided funds for the school Libraries. Some of Children's literature in Hindi and English languages has been translated in Tibetan also. The present workshop for the Translators is also a part of the project initiated by the department.
